How can we shape the future of policymaking in middle-income countries in Europe and Central Asia (ECA) to boost economic growth? This special workshop provided a clear roadmap, sharing strategies essential for navigating the complexities of economic growth, productivity enhancement, and overcoming the middle-income trap.
The Institute for Economic Development, the World Bank, the University of Chicago, and the National Bank of Romania hosted the ECA Growth Academy in Bucharest, Romania, on May 22-24, 2025.

Structured around the key themes of the World Development Report 2024: The Middle-Income Trap, the Academy brought together policymakers, researchers, and development practitioners from across the region for a three-day, intensive workshop focused on advancing productivity and tackling the middle-income trap. The program focused on:
- Concepts of creative destruction for middle-income economies
- Challenges and opportunities for middle-income economies
- Innovative approaches to boosting productivity
