Repurposing Subsidies

The Institute for Economic Development, in partnership with the World Bank Group AgriConnect Secretariat and the LEADS Initiative, invites you to a webinar on “Repurposing Subsidies,” part of the AgriConnect Knowledge Series: Evidence for Better Jobs in Farming and Agribusiness.

Subsidies are among the most widely used policy instruments to stimulate the adoption of improved agricultural technologies and drive on-farm productivity growth—an essential foundation for creating more and better jobs in agriculture. When well designed, subsidies can help farmers overcome liquidity constraints, encourage experimentation with modern inputs, and accelerate productivity gains. Yet many traditional programs rely on rigid in-kind input packages that crowd out private markets, distribute identical kits to farmers with very different needs and capacities, and limit productive investment decisions. At the same time, growing fiscal constraints and concerns around inefficient use and overapplication of inputs in some settings are increasing the urgency to modernize subsidy design. 

This session will review the latest evidence on how subsidy programs can be redesigned to improve productivity, strengthen private sector delivery systems, and increase cost-effectiveness.
